Kia ora Michelle! Great to hear you're coming to Aotearoa New Zealand! I'd recommend emailing our staff - Ariana and John - john_youthworkers@xtra.co.nz

Michelle, I'd say have a look at Involve 08, the conference will be in July 2008 and will bring together the sector- that'd be a great way to make connections and find out about what's what. There are often opportunities for volunteering and by making links with people you'll be able to start doing that. Check out the publication 'Real Work' which paints a picture of the sector here.

The Department of Labour have funded a whole load of 'settlement support' roles, many of which are based within local councils. There are also fair few websites with jobs, like 'seek.co.nz' and 'trade me'.. have a look there and you'll get a feel for what gets advertsied. I moved here from UK, and had a few vc and telephone interviews before getting here... and in hindsight I am not at all surprised that I wasn't sucessful. I think that newcomers need to make a commitment to getting some experience and learning about what's so special about this place, enrol in Te Reo classes and get to know folk- find out about youth work networks.
