Support from the local bodies in your Region/Area.

Do you have support from Council? as a Youth Worker and for your Regional Youth Work Network?

Well - in theory we get support from our local council. They love the idea of having Youth Workers in each of our smaller towns, and acknowledge the need for us, but the minute we begin to talk about the practical ways they can support us, namely MOOLAH, there is some pretty uncomfortable silences, and a whole heap of back-tracking.
BUT - we fight the good fight and will not give up! If I keep being annoying, I'll get my way!:)

Hawkes Bay Youth Workers Collective is fortunate to have both Hastings and Napier local government supporting Youth Workers and the young people they engage with. The Collective has a steering committee with Hastings and Napier Youth co-ordinators as members. Both local governments support the development of young people and are committed to having representation on the HB Youth Workers Steering Committee.

The Gisborne District Council received $38,000 from MSD to progress a Tairawhiti Youth Development Strategy to the action plan / implementation phase - it was in the GDC bank account and they sent it back! Then the Crime Prevention Unit offered the Council $270,000 for crime prevention initatives - mostly working with young people around alcohol and drug issues, violence prevention, etc. as a one-off project - and GDC turned it down!
Now there is some energy within the Council staff and one or two councillors to progress things, but we'll see see what happens - and get on with other stuff in the meantime! :)

There is no compulsion on local govt to support youth workers, so ones that have resources will be able to provide something and ones who don't will see it as a low priority.

Actually - there is a little compulsion, in the form of the Local Govt Act 2002, where somewhere is a part that says Local Govt have responsibility to care for social well-being - I guess the major issue is the availability of funding, and the priorities of elected members.
