Are you involved in a Youth Workers Network in your area?

What are the Pros and Cons of a local Youth Workers Network?

Yeah I'm proud to be connected to WYN (Wellington Youth Network).

Check out http://wellingtonyouthnetwork.wikispaces.com/

Cons?
- sometimes a hassle to find the time to go to yet another bloody meeting that seems to come around so frequently!

Pros?
- catching up with other people passionate about young people
- finding out about other organisations I can refer young people to
- celebrating our work
- discussing and debating tricky issues (like once we chatted about whether it was ok to let young people play music in youth centres if it had swearing in it...)

There is a long history here in Wellington and as a newcomer to NZ and a youth worker I got a lot from the network, going to meetings and finding out all about the range of initiatives and forms of colaborration, perhaps the nicest bunch of folk I could wish to meet... I'm now the proud organiser for Wellington - which is a special group of people... many being for a lot of the time an e-mail address on a list and at other times when something sparks an interest a person who calls up, steps up at a meetings or sends something through to share... we're looking ahead to a great year of colaborration.

gee... can't totally remember... we're talking like 2001...

It probably came down to having a discussion with the appropriate young people and doing some negotiation. I've got questions as to whether flat-out bans and hardcore rules ever work. Aren't rules meant to be broken?

Young people should be partners in their development and giving them choices over less important things (like the music in our centre) helps develop skills in making more substantial life-changing decisions...

what do others think?
