Have your say about the recently released State of the Nation Speeches.

Feedback, lets get the discussion going, what as Youth Workers do you think, feel or have to say about what our political leaders have said about Young People in our Country, Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Interesting set of political rhetoric I feel. the move seems to be toward more punitive measures to keep young people in school or training. I worry that the talk will mean a move toward some of the really badly thought out and implemented ideas of the Uk governemnt, which actually forced more young people to exclude themselves from services. I still failed to hear anything about programmes designed by young people, or anyting about consulting young people. It would be good to hear from the team at National as a position statement.
Thats my ill informed 2 cents worth anyway.

If as concerned citizens of the future of youth in New Zealand shouldn't we be raising expectations?

Expecting everyone below 18 to be in some form or training or education is a great start to raising expectations. Now everyone knows formal traditional schooling in not for all but this concept goes well beyond traditional schooling. Not forcing people to stay in school but to keep learning.

Yes, i agree with above it may be rolled out too quickly to be running smoothly first time. Do you then disageree with the intentions?

As NZers we need to embrace and work with such concepts to lift the youth.

I work closely with a lot of ITO (industry training organisations) and they are finding more and more youth are coming to them from leaving school early. I think this is a strong indication that the youth want this also, they want to succeed, you'll have to ask them though.

Low expectations always achieves the desired result.

I believe National are right on the button in terms of what needs to be done but there are issues around their execution. Keys said recently that past governments have not looked through the eyes of young people (not in those words) but some of his solutions I think are potential set backs e.g. Sport and Rec speech and new initiatives - All funding will be going to the front line at the expense of educating the public about the importance of young people being active.

My five cents
