By themselves they are ineffective and potentially make things worse for young people - however the evidence (ref: Kaye McLaren's lit. reviews) suggests that wilderness/outdoor programmes as part of longer interventions can be very effective components that provide a context of 'disequilibrium' (sp?) which allows a young person to make a significant break with 'normal' life, explore new ideas and learn about themselves in new environments - the key is being able to generalise the experience and transfer the learning into 'normal' life when they get home again.

Youth worker in Australia for several years, We found a programme similar to the above mentioned was effective to a degree... What happens with these youth once the training has been completed, who does the follow up, what is the programs end outcome looking towards being?

Why and when would you impliment this program?
Who or what organisations will support and run alongside this?
What is its purpose?
Do you take youth out of daily life environment to complete the boot camp and then throw them back into there reality where all training and skill learnt is put aside for them to deal with life?
or would you teach your skills to them in there norm environment?
