Hi guys,
My name is Jay Henderson. I'm a 24 year old female, currently living in Auckland Central. I moved here just over a year ago after been born and raised in Wellington. Whilst living in Wellington, I was working as a Peer Support Worker at Vibe Youth Health Service in Lower Hutt, and at the same time studying for my Youth Work Diploma through Te Kaiawhina Ahumahi. As well as that, I also did voluntary work for Secret Level Youth Venue in Lower Hutt, and was part of Youth For Christ from the age of 13 until I was 18. Pretty much, once getting my job at Vibe, I realised that Youth Work was my passion, and that nothing else was going to do it for me in life!
I decided to move to Auckland for a very girly reason (my partner lives up here!) but figured I wouldn't be losing out, kind of assuming blindly that there would be a lot of work up here for me to get into. I was wrong. Or maybe I was right. I don't really have the network up here that I did in Wellington, so I could just be looking in all the wrong places!
Basically, I can't resume my study with Te Kaiawhina Ahumahi unless I am working with young people, so for the moment I am actually studying Early Childhood (until December) it's ok - but ultimately it's not how I want to be spending my life.
I was wondering if anyone out there can help me out - recommend places to contact about employment, maybe give me an idea of some options regarding study?
I feel at a complete loss not doing what I love, and having no idea how to get it back!
Cheers guys,
Jay

Hi there Jay - Good luck with the job search - there are jobs out there so keep on keeping on - If your looking for ideas in terms of study I recommend that you look into the Bachelor of Human services, Youth Major with the University of Auckland - I think this is the next BIG thing in terms of Youth work Qualifications.

Hi Jay, My own company Workforce, do the Youth Work, Level 3, 4 and the Diploma but not in Auckland yet, sorry. You could contact Praxis. They are wellington based but do The Youth Diploma around the country too. As for work, contact the usual suspects, YMCA, Councils, Police, Churches - think all the same in Wellington but in Auckland. Good luck.

Hi Lyn, thanks for the reply.
I'm actually doing a Bachelor of Human Services majoring in Youth Work at Auckland Uni now, so that's all sorted :)
As for work - I'm mainly focusing on getting my essays etc in on time at the moment, but will probably start searching again in a few months once I'm settled into Uni a bit more!
:)
