FAQ
How long will it take?
We think that it would take the average experienced youth worker between one and two years to complete the qualification through this process. Beginning youth workers may be encouraged to complete an intermediate qualification (level 3 or 4) through another provider before they begin.
How much will it cost?
Each youth worker (or their agency) will be asked to pay an enrolment fee of $112.50 when they sign up for the National Diploma. There is then an additional fee of $5 charged per credit. The work is divided up into 9 modules of approx 25 credits each. The per credit fee will be charged as you complete each module.
There will be a cost for food, facilities and materials at each workshop. If the local network is unable to find funding to cover this cost it will be passed on to youth workers or their employers.
How do I get started?
There is no start or finish date, you begin when you are ready and complete modules at your own rate. You have a maximum of three years to complete the whole qualification.
Approach your local network or contact the TOHU project team directly for help in getting started.
What if I’m not confident with academic work?
The TOHU project takes a ‘communities of learning’ approach –which means that we encourage each person to participate in a supportive group (that will meet fortnightly after each workshop) to help you process learning and complete assignments. You will still need to do your own work, but can expect personal support, encouragement, opportunities to talk things through and an environment where it is okay to ask for help.
During the assessment process you will be asked to demonstrate your understanding and competence. You can arrange to do this any way you like as long as we can collect evidence of it.
What can I do with this qualification?
The Social Service ITO is currently working with the sector to develop a degree in youth development and has made a commitment to ensure that people who have completed the National Diploma will be able to transfer credit from this directly into the degree programme.
